Born in Charleston, South Carolina, October 31, 1931, Geneva McHoney Sanders passed away at John F Kennedy Haven Hospice Center in Edison, New Jersey on May 31, 2017. Geneva lived in Fords, New Jersey the last 10 years, moving from Rome, New York where she had resided for 39 years. She retired from General Electric, Utica, New York after 25 years and later worked for the then-mayor of Rome, current New York State Senator Joseph Griffo. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star (which she joined in Wiesbaden, Germany when she was an Air Force wife) and when she moved to Fords, joined the Cathedral International Senior Ministry of Perth Amboy, New Jersey.
Well-known for her intellect, love of literature and sports, Geneva leaves behind sister Gloria Spear and her three daughters Paula, Robin and Sharon Sanders and their father Robert Sanders, his wife Doris Coaxum Sanders, and his granddaughter Brianna Hamilton; niece Jamet Ross, her husband Ruldolph and their family; nephews Andre and Delendo; and, scores of other family and friends. Kinney St., Newark, New Jersey 07103; viewing 3-5 p.m., funeral 5-6 p.m. Local Services: Friday, June 9, 2017, 10:30 a.m. Pasley’s Mortuary Chapel, 1115 5th Ave Maryville, Charleston, SC. Interment will follow in Emanuel AME Church Cemetery, Lemon Street, Charleston, SC. Geneva is immortalized by her daughters on the “2015 Society Wall, Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture, Washington, D.C.
